The Eight Asnaf, Explained

A short tour through the eight categories of zakat recipients and what they mean for modern distribution.

Surah At-Tawbah, verse 60, identifies the eight asnaf. Understanding each one is the starting point for any zakat distribution policy.

The categories

  • Fuqara — those without sufficient means.
  • Masakin — those in difficult circumstances.
  • Amilin — those administering the collection and distribution.
  • Muallaf — those whose hearts are being reconciled to Islam.
  • Riqab — those in bondage seeking emancipation.
  • Gharimin — those overwhelmed by debt incurred for lawful needs.
  • Fisabilillah — those striving in the path of Allah.
  • Ibnus Sabil — travelers cut off from their means.

A well-designed distribution policy maps each disbursement back to one of these categories, with documentation to support the classification.
