The Eight Asnaf, Explained
A short tour through the eight categories of zakat recipients and what they mean for modern distribution.
Surah At-Tawbah, verse 60, identifies the eight asnaf. Understanding each one is the starting point for any zakat distribution policy.
The categories
- Fuqara — those without sufficient means.
- Masakin — those in difficult circumstances.
- Amilin — those administering the collection and distribution.
- Muallaf — those whose hearts are being reconciled to Islam.
- Riqab — those in bondage seeking emancipation.
- Gharimin — those overwhelmed by debt incurred for lawful needs.
- Fisabilillah — those striving in the path of Allah.
- Ibnus Sabil — travelers cut off from their means.
A well-designed distribution policy maps each disbursement back to one of these categories, with documentation to support the classification.
